Periwinkle Ingredients

Pure Honey
Honey contains a wide array of vitamins, essential minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants. This invaluable natural source ingredient has emollient-like properties which can soften and soothe the skin and helps the outer skin layer (the epidermis) to retain moisture.

Rice Bran Oil
Rice Bran Oil is particularly high in fatty acids and rich in unsaponifiables. It has some anti-oxidizing properties as well as some sunscreen properties. Use Rice Bran Oil in formulations where softening and moisturizing properties are needed. It is good for mature, delicate or sensitive skin. Rice Bran Oil is especially good for face and hair formulations or baby formulations.

Castor Oil
This oil has anti-inflammatory properties and was originally used to treat leprosy. It is an excellent pain reliever and good for conditions such as Sciatica, Rheumatism, Shingles etc. It is also anti-bacterial and used to treat Vaginitis, Cervical erosions, Eczema, Psoriasis, Chapped Skin, Cracked nipples, burns, infected wounds etc. Used for hair conditions such as dry, brittle, damaged hair or hair loss. Castor Oil is beneficial in treating acne, rosacea, pimples and black spots. This is a very thick oil with a prominent odour and slightly sticky texture. Not suitable for pregnant ladies.

Evening Primrose Oil
Excellent oil for dry, aging or chapped skin. This oil is very high in GLA (gamma linolenic acid) which makes it valuable for the healthy functioning of body tissues and will cover conditions such as, eczema, psoriasis, PMS and Menopause. It is an excellent moisturizer. It is a fine textured oil which is derived from the seeds of the Evening Primrose. It is a golden yellow colour and is rich in vitamins and minerals.

Fractionated Coconut Oil
This is one of the most preferred oils along with jojoba mainly because of it's light texture and long shelf life. It is easily absorbed making it a good lotion oil base. An extremely light, clear oil which is odourless. This fractionated oil contains lauric acid and vitamin E. It may help to prevent destructive free-radical formation on the skin's surface. Warning: Some people may be allergic to this oil.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil
It is a good oil for skin care, especially dry skin. It makes an excellent conditioner for hair and nails. A good oil for making salves, suppositories and infusions. This is a dark Green oil which is rich in minerals, vitamins, and proteins and essential fatty acids, especially alpha linolenic acid.

Soy Bean Oil
This is a light oil that has a superior moisturising effect on all skin types. It has one of the highest linoleic acid contents of all known oils.

Sunflower Oil
Sunflower oil has a light texture and is pleasant to use. It contains vitamins A, C, D, and E, a high linoleic acid content, and few saturated fatty acids. This oil is easily absorbed and can be used on all skin types. Its high vitamin E content makes it especially helpful for delicate and dry skin. It has a protective effect on the skin and is healing when applied to leg ulcers, bruises and skin diseases.

Shea Butter
Shea Butter is a white or yellowish fat obtained from the nut of the SheaTree (Butyrospermum parkii) which grows in Africa. Used by African healers over thousands of years as an exotic luxury emollient, reported to benefit dry, damaged and maturing skin. Shea Butter is known for its natural healthy and healing attributes which works in partnership with your skin and body chemistry as a substitute for Cocoa Butter. One unique characteristic of Shea Butter is its content of unsaponiables (up to 8%) which imparts soothing properties and provides extra sun protection.

Cocoa Butter
Cocoa Butter is also known as oil of theobroma (Latin for food of the gods), it is obtained by grinding roasted cocoa beans and then separating the vegetable fat. It is used by plantation workers to protect and soften skin. It is a popular ingredient in commercially produced hand, body and face creams. Like the Shea Butter its benefit is its use as an emollient to soften dry skin. It is said to be beneficial in the treatment and prevention of stretchmarks if applied daily to the abdomen, breasts and thighs. It is solid, but melts at body temperature. A derivative of the cocoa bean (Theobromine), it is a bitter colourless alkaloid that is used in medicine as a diuretic and cardiac stimulant.

Mango Butter
Mango Butter is obtained from de-shelled fruit kernels of the mango tree, Mangifera indica, native to sub-continental India and the tropics. It has emollient properties, high oxidative ability, wound healing, and regenerative activity due to its high unsaponiable. It is a soft solid with and a very slight sweet scent, and an excellent replacement of paraffin-based emollient. It has a protective effect against UV radiation. Beneficial ingredient in skin care products, lotions, massage creams, and hair products.

Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple Cider Vinegar has a tonic action that promotes blood circulation in the small capillaries that irrigate the skin. It is also antiseptic, preventing the proliferation of bacteria, viruses, or yeast that trigger infection. It can dissolve excessive fatty deposits at the surface of the skin and reduce scaly or peeling conditions. Lastly, vinegar regulates the pH of the skin.

Chamomile Herb Infusion
The most important actions of Chamomile are its soothing, calming, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also effective in treating swollen painful joints, inflamed tendons and sprains.

Peppermint Herb Infusion
Used traditionally for various stomach and gastro-intestinal tract ailments such as travel sickness, diarrhea, and heartburn. Peppermint can also be used for its cooling effect in feverish conditions, since it induces sweating which will help to reduce a fever in a natural way. Another use of this oil is to reduce fatigue and to increase mental alertness. Inhaled directly from the bottle, it will clear the head leaving you feeling fresh and bright.

Hydrolyzed Oats
This naturally derived, soluble form of hydrolyzed whole oats contains mainly oligosaccharides (carbohydrates). This novel skin care ingredient can be used to improve the feel properties of creams and lotions and imparts a soft, cushiony feel on the skin, giving it a near-velvet smoothness after drying. Can be used neat—non-greasy, non-sticky. Studies have shown that Hydrolyzed Oats retain significantly more moisture no matter what the humidity, and gain up to 50% more moisture at relative low humidity—when extra moisture is most needed.

Phenoserve (Preservative)
A good all round preservative that protects against microbes, fungi and bacteria. This liquid preservative is used to inhibit microbial growth in creams, lotions and salt/sugar scrubs. This preservative is more suitable for products that are manufactured at higher temperature ranges. Phenoserve is composed of Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Butylparaben and Propylparaben.

Conditioning Emulsifier
This wonderful wax is a combination of a conditioning compound, which is derived from the natural plant oil Colza (Canola), and a fatty alcohol (Cetearyl Alcohol).

Emulsifying Wax NF
This is a self emulsifying wax that emulsifies the water phase and oil phase.

Glycerine - Vegetable
This invaluable natural source ingredient (derived from Palm Oil) has emollient-like properties which can soften and soothe the skin and helps the outer skin layer (the epidermis) retain moisture.

Stearic Acid (Vegetable Origin)
Cosmetic grade, vegetable derived Stearic Acid that is used as a thickening agent in lotions and creams.

Beeswax
Virgin beeswax contains all the goodness of pollen, tree resins - just like honey. It is a natural emulsifier and is ideally suited for a balm or cream base. It is very nourishing to all skin types, even sensitive skin. It naturally protects skin while allowing it to breathe. Honeycomb has a very long history of use and has been revered for its healing properties for thousands of years.
